For Florida energy code, changes are made that will take effect for houses permitted on or after July 1, 2016. If you are reading this prior to July 1, 2016, you may want to wait if you have houses that will be permitted prior to that date. The code changes passed by the legislature and implemented by the Florida Building Commission that necessitated EnergyGauge changes are the following:

  1. The requirement that whole-house mechanical ventilation system will be required for houses with air leakage of less than 3 ACH50.
  2. The reference home will use 7 ACH50 as the air leakage (compared to 5 ACH50). This will improve e-ratios slightly.
  3. Energy raters will be able to provide an energy rating index (ERI) as a path for code compliance. The ERI must be 58 or less.

Energy raters: This version has the same HERS 2013 calculation as in version 5.0.03. You should not experience any change in HERS index using that calculation option. Version 5.1.00 also provides HERS 2014 calculation. HERS 2014 should be used for any new projects after July 1, 2016 and RESNET rules indicate that any home permitted after September 1, 2016 will need to be calculated with RESNET Standard 2014 selected.

Version 5.1.00 fully implements the new ANSI/RESNET 301-2014 Addendum A hot water system calculations. These new hot water calculations allow HERS ratings to gain HERS credits for improved plumbing design, hot water piping insulation, low-flow fixtures, drain water heat recovery systems (DWHR), hot water recirculation systems and low water-use clothes washers and dishwashers.
